Eurostat and the UN Statistics Division jointly organised from 6th to 8th May 2008 a high level Conference on "International Outreach and Coordination in National Accounts for Sustainable Growth and Development". This Conference was an opportunity to bring together producers and users of statistics as well as technical and financial partners from all regions of the world. The main objective was to facilitate the outreach of the System of National Accounts (SNA) and international coordination to improve implementation of harmonised methodologies in the context of development cooperation for poverty reduction strategies, as well as sustainable growth and development;
More specific objectives included:
- to facilitate the outreach of the SNA in developing countries;
- to facilitate international coordination in an area where different partners are particularly active at bilateral and multilateral level;
- to establish orientations for development co-operation in the field of national accounts in order to improve coordination and efficiency of aid and sustainability of project results;
- to establish orientations at country level in order to improve in a sustainable way the quality, production and dissemination of data.
At the end of the conference the "Luxembourg Recommendations" were adopted. They will be submitted to the Inter Secretariat Working Group on National Accounts (ISWGNA) for follow-up and presented to the 2009 session of the UN Statistical Commission.
