Crime and Criminal Justice

Statistical data on crime and criminal justice are important because of:
  • the political and social importance of crime
  • public concern about crime
Developing EU Statistics on crime and criminal justice

Providing data on crime in the EU is complicated by considerable differences in the methods and definitions used in the Member States. This should be taken into account when using statistical figures.

Eurostat received a mandate under the 2004 Hague Programme to develop comparable statistics on crime and criminal justice. A series of measures towards this end were undertaken under the 2006-10 Action Plan. The system will now be enhanced and extended as part of the implementation of the 2009 Stockholm Programme: An open and secure Europe serving and protecting citizens.
