Eurostat and DG Taxation and Customs Union jointly publish a publication entitled Taxation Trends in the EU (latest edition released on 1st of July 2011). It provides a comprehensive description of the features and related data for EU taxation systems.

The data are presented within a unified statistical framework (the ESA95 harmonised system of national and regional accounts). In addition, detailed lists of taxes and social contributions according to national classification (known as National tax lists - NTLs) with the corresponding amounts and references to ESA95 categories were used for the classification according to economic function and alcohol, tobacco & environmental tax (data available in DG Taxation and Customs Union website).

Taxation trends in the European Union - Main results illustrates the main findings from the report in a concise format .

Detailed tables on the structure of Government Finance Statistics (Excel or PDF files) can also be found from the Data page.

Taxation trends in the European Union - Data for the EU Member States, Iceland and Norway Taxation trends in the European Union - Data for the EU Member States, Iceland and Norway

This report contains a detailed statistical and economic analysis of the tax systems of the Member States of the European Union, plus Iceland and Norway, which are Members of the European Economic Area. The data are presented within a unified statistical framework (the ESA95 harmonised system of national and regional accounts), which makes it possible to assess the heterogeneous national tax systems on a fully comparable basis. The standard classifications of tax revenues (by major type of tax or by level of government) presented in most international tax revenue statistics are hard to interpret in economic terms.
Taxation trends in the European Union - Focus on the crisis: the main impacts on EU tax systems Taxation trends in the European Union - Focus on the crisis: the main impacts on EU tax systems

What was the impact of the economic and financial crisis on EU tax systems? This booklet, based on the 2011 report "Taxation trends in the European Union", provides an overview of the way in which the recession that started in 2008 affected the tax systems of the 27 EU Member states. It examines the impact on tax ratios and analyses the reaction of tax policy by country and by type of tax, answering questions such as: Did EU Member States cut or increase taxes in the recession? Was the impact of the recession stronger in countries with higher tax ratios? Did the tax policy choices take into account the existing level of taxation?
The booklet is written in a concise, readable format and includes a statistical annex containing the main data on taxation by country and for the EU as a whole.
