MERCOSUR

Statistics objectives

The MERCOSUR Regional Strategy Paper 2007-2013 provides €50 million to support projects in three priority areas:

1. Mercosur institutional strengthening

2. Supporting Mercosur in preparing for the implementation of the Association Agreement

3. Fostering the participation of civil society to Mercosur integration process.

Statistics can be considerate a tool in support of the need for the "institutional strengthening".

EC partnership with MERCOSUR

The MERCOSUR was established in 1991. Its aims are:

  • the establishment of a Common Market with the free circulation of goods and services,
  • macroeconomic convergence.

Its members are Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Venezuela is currently a candidate country to join MERCOSUR.

The Commission has 2 statistical co-operation projects with MERCOSUR. Both are designed to support the process of regional integration and are complementary in content.

Both of two projects will be finished 2010.
