The European Statistics Code of Practice sets the standard for developing, producing and disseminating European statistics. The European Statistical System (ESS) has committed itself to respect the principles of the Code and to work towards its implementation following a self-regulatory approach.

Summary information on progress in National Statistical Institutes
Each year Eurostat monitors compliance with the Code of Practice across the ESS. Summary information is provided to the European Statistical Governance Advisory Board (ESGAB) for its Annual Report to the European Parliament and the Council:
2008 Report to the European Parliament and Council
Based on the peer review results and complementary information on compliance with the Code, in 2008 the Commission reported on the implementation of the Code of Practice in the European Statistical System (ESS). The path defined by the National Statistical Institutes and Eurostat towards full compliance with the Code is outlined in an annex to the report:
To complement the self-assessments with an external view, all National Statistical Institutes and Eurostat underwent a Peer Review during 2006-2008 identifying compliance with the Code in particular in the areas related to the institutional environment and dissemination of statistics (principles 1-6 and 15 of the Code of Practice).
As a first step in 2005 a self-assessment questionnaire, detailing the principles and indicators of the Code of Practice, was filled in by Eurostat and all National Statistical Institutes of the European Statistical System.
