  Euro area annual inflation up to 0.4%
  Euro area annual inflation is expected to be 0.4% in October 2014, up from 0.3% in September, according to a flash estimate from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

  Euro area unemployment rate at 11.5%
  The euro area (EA18) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 11.5% in September 2014, stable compared with August 2014, but down from 12.0% in September 2013. The EU28 unemployment rate was 10.1% in September 2014, also stable compared with August 2014 and down from 10.8% in September 2013. These figures are published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

  EU28 current account surplus €32.6 billion
  The EU28 seasonally adjusted external current account recorded a surplus of €32.6 billion (1.0% of GDP) in the second quarter of 2014, up from a surplus of €8.1 bn (0.2% of GDP) in the first quarter of 2014 and down from a surplus of €40.9 bn (1.3% of GDP) in the second quarter of 2013, according to a second estimate released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

  Business investment rate stable at 21.6% in the euro area and 21.9% in the EU28
  In the second quarter of 2014, the business investment rate was 21.6% in the euro area, stable compared with the first quarter of 2014. This was the result of stable investment while gross value added remained nearly stable (+0.1%). Total stocks (materials, supplies and finished goods) fell.

  Household saving rate down to 12.9% in the euro area and to 10.4% in the EU28
  The household saving rate in the euro area was 12.9% in the second quarter of 2014, compared with 13.1% in the first quarter of 2014. In the EU28, the household saving rate was 10.4%, compared with 10.7% the previous quarter.

  Seasonally adjusted government deficit down slightly to 2.5% of GDP in the euro area
  In the second quarter of 2014, the seasonally adjusted general government deficit to GDP ratio stood at 2.5% in the euro area (EA18), a slight decrease compared with the first quarter of 2014. In the EU28, the deficit to GDP ratio also decreased slightly to 3.0% of GDP.

  Government debt increased to 92.7% of GDP in euro area and to 87.0% in EU28
  At the end of the second quarter of 2014, the government debt to GDP ratio in the euro area (EA18) stood at 92.7%, compared with 91.9% at the end of the first quarter of 2014. In the EU28, the ratio increased from 86.0% to 87.0%. Compared with the second quarter of 2013, the government debt to GDP ratio rose in both the euro area (from 91.7% to 92.7%) and the EU28 (from 85.1% to 87.0%).

  More than 2.3 million first residence permits issued in the EU28 in 2013
  In 2013, 2.36 million first residence permits were issued in the EU28 to non-EU citizens, up by 12.5% compared with 2012 but down by 7.0% compared with 2008. The decrease recorded from 2008 is mainly due to the fall in the number of first permits issued for employment reasons (from 0.8 million in 2008 to 0.5 mn in 2013). In 2013, 28.5% of first residence permits were issued for family reasons, 19.7% for education, 22.7% for employment reasons and 29.1% for other reasons.

  Euro area and EU28 government deficit at 2.9% and 3.2% of GDP respectively
  In 2013, the government deficit of both the euro area (EA18) and the EU28 decreased in absolute terms compared with 2012, while the government debt rose in both zones. In the euro area the government deficit to GDP ratio decreased from 3.6% in 2012 to 2.9% in 2013 and in the EU28 from 4.2% to 3.2%. In the euro area the government debt to GDP ratio increased from 89.0% at the end of 2012 to 90.9% at the end of 2013 and in the EU28 from 83.5% to 85.4%.

  This Data in Focus is the monthly publication of Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices (HICP) for September 2014. The DIF contains indices and rates of change for individual MSs, the EU, the EEA and the euro area. It also includes a graph showing the annual inflation in all Member States in ascending order as well as a table with the indices for the most frequently consulted special aggregates (like"energy", "all-items excluding tobacco", etc…)
