  Number of visitors from Russia in hotels and other accommodation establishments has decreased
 
Latvian hotels and other accommodation establishments in the 3rd quarter of 2014

The number of visitors in hotels and other accommodation establishments in the 3rd quarter of this year comprised 764.6 thousand people. That is 11.3% more than in the 3rd quarter of 2013.

According to the data of Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), the number of visitors in hotels and other accommodation establishments1 in the 3rd quarter of this year comprised 764.6 thousand people. That is 11.3% more than in the 3rd quarter of 2013. Of which 68.6% were foreign tourists and 31.4% – residents of Latvia. Similar breakdown of visitors was also in the previous quarters.

  Social protection expenditure increased by 6.1% in 2013
 
Social protection expenditure in 2013

In 2013 social protection expenditure in Latvia accounted for EUR 3 276.8 mln, which is 6.1% more than in 2012. Last year the largest growth (of 22.7%) was recorded in the expenditure for providing support to the unemployed.

Preliminary data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that in 2013 social protection expenditure in Latvia in accordance with the ESSPROS1 methodology accounted for EUR 3 276.8 mln, which is EUR 188.4 mln more than in 2012.

  Employment level slightly increases during the year

In the 3rd quarter of 2014 there were 885.7 thsd employed persons in Latvia or 59.3% of the population aged 15 - 74, of which 4.1 thsd were employed persons still having the status of the unemployed. A year ago 59% of the Latvian residents were employed, and in the 2nd quarter of 2014 - 59.3%. 

In the 3rd quarter of 2014 there were 885.7 thsd employed persons in Latvia or 59.3% of the population aged 15 - 74, of which 4.1 thsd were employed persons still having the status of the unemployed. A year ago 59% of the Latvian residents were employed, and in the 2nd quarter of 2014 - 59.3%, according to the results of the Labour Force Survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) of Latvia.

  Level of producer prices in October decreased by 0.5%
 
On producer price changes in industry in October 2014

Compared to September producer price level in the Latvian industry in October 2014 dropped by 0.5%. Prices of products sold on the domestic market fell by 0.5%. The prices of exported products dropped by 0.4%, of which in exports to euro area countries increased by 0.1%, but in exports to non-euro area countries declined by 0.7%.

According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) compared to September producer price level in the Latvian industry in October 2014 dropped by 0.5%. Prices of products sold on the domestic market fell by 0.5%. The prices of exported products dropped by 0.4%, of which in exports to euro area countries increased by 0.1%, but in exports to non-euro area countries declined by 0.7%. Over the month producer price changes were mostly affected by price drop in electricity, steam and air conditioning supply.

  The share of unemployed persons aged 15 - 24 is lower than a year ago

In the 3rd quarter of 2014 the share of unemployed persons in the total number of economically active population was 10.6%. The number of unemployed youth aged 15 - 24 in the total number of active youth amounted to 21.4%, which is 6.2 percentage points less than a year ago (27.6%)

In the 3rd quarter of 2014 the number of unemployed persons in the age group 15 to 74 years accounted for 104.9 thsd persons, according to the results of the Labour Force Survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB). 18.9 thsd or 18% of the total number of unemployed persons were aged 15-24.

  Number of students enrolled in vocational education institutions increases by 1.6%

In the school year 2014/2015, 11.7 thsd students were enrolled in 62 vocational education institutions and 14 colleges offering vocational education programmes. Compared to the previous academic year the number of enrolled students has increased by 1.6%. 46.5% of the students enrolled are women.

Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in the school year 2014/2015, 11.7 thsd students were enrolled in 62 vocational education institutions and 14 colleges implementing vocational education programmes. Compared to the previous school year the number of enrolled students has increased by 1.6%. 46.5% of the students enrolled are women.

  Number of registered marriages increased by 9% in the first ten months of this year

In the first ten months of 2014, 11 007 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 9% more than in first ten months of 2013. 925 marriages were concluded in October 2014, which is 165 marriages more than in October 2013. 

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that in the first ten months of this year 11 007 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 9% more than in first ten months of 2013. 925 marriages were concluded in October 2014, which is 165 marriages more than in October 2013. Like in other years also this year the number of marriages registered in October is almost two times smaller than in September, since traditionally the largest share of marriages are concluded in the warmer months of the year.

In the first nine months of 2014 the volume of goods exported at current prices, as compared to the nine months of the previous year, increased by EUR 144.1 mln or 2.0%, but volume of imports reduced by EUR 103.2 mln or 1.1%.

  Exports of cereals increases in September

In September 2014 compared to previous month exports value of goods at current prices grew by 12.7%, but imports value of goods – by 15.2%. In September Latvia exported goods in amount of 914.0 mln euros, but imported - in amount of 1,138.2 mln euros.

Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in September 2014 compared to previous month exports value of goods at current prices grew by 12.7%, but imports value of goods by 15.2%. In September Latvia exported goods in amount of 914.0 mln euros, but imported - in amount of 1,138.2 mln euros. Foreign trade balance slightly worsened as exports in total foreign trade value declined to 44.5% (in August 2014 – 45.1%).
