The Structural Indicators cover the six domains of General Economic Background, Employment, Innovation and Research, Economic Reform, Social Cohesion as well as the Environment.
The set comprises currently 79 indicators and was created following the invitation of the Lisbon European Council in March 2000 to the Commission to draw up an annual synthesis report on the basis of statistical indicators.
The Structural indicators are an instrument for the objective assessment of progress made towards the Lisbon objectives, and support the key messages of the annual progress report. The majority of indicators stem from the European Statistical System but there are also indicators that come from sources outside the ESS.
The list does not remain stable. Changes occur as
1) new indicators are added to the list;
2) some indicators are replaced by better ones.
